Abdominal Wall Weakness

Condition Overview

During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles and the linea alba soften and stretch to make room for the growing fetus.

Certain factors such as poor pressure mgmt and straining with toileting, excessive pushing during delivery, or poor body mechanics and breath holding with exercise of daily activities can also contribute to this weakening. Additionally, delivery by cesarean section also increases the risk of abdominal wall weakness as the surgery affects multiple layers of tissue throughout the abdominal wall and can also lead to scar restrictions.
